PCI Presented with Best Paper Award at ASME Turbo Expo 2004 NORTH HAVEN, CT -- (June 16, 2004) -- Precision Combustion, Inc. (PCI) announced today that it was presented with a "Best Paper Award" at ASME Turbo Expo 2004 in Vienna, Austria. The paper, titled "Rich-Catalytic Lean-Burn Combustion for Low-Single-Digit NOx Gas Turbines," was submitted to ASME Turbo Expo 2003 and was selected by the Combustion and Fuels Committee as the Best Paper in the Applications category. PCIs paper on development and testing of a Rich-Catalytic Lean-Burn Combustor (patented and trademarked by PCI as RCL®) described work performed in close collaboration with Solar Turbines, Inc. in demonstrating catalytic combustion for Taurus 70 applications and operation in a modified Solar Saturn engine. During the test, the 750 kW engine demonstrated average NOx emissions of 2.1 ppm over the allowable operating range with CO emissions below 10 ppm and without significant combustion noise (less than 0.15% peak-to-peak). The RCL® technology was developed under Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) and other Department of Energy (DOE) programs for natural gas fueled ground power gas turbines and is currently undergoing additional engine testing. PCI is also exploring derivatives of the technology to allow the burning of coal-derived syngas fuel for Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) powerplants and jet fuel for military jet engines. These development programs are supported by DOE and the U.S. Navy, respectively. Dr. Rene LaPierre, PCIs Vice President of Research and Engineering commented "We are very pleased by the recognition that ASME bestowed on PCI reflecting the successful demonstration of our RCL®TM technology in a Solar gas turbine engine. We look forward to continuing to work with Solar as we migrate our RCL®TM technology to the Taurus 70 platform. " Authors of the paper included Lance L. Smith, Hasan Karim, Marco J. Castaldi, Shahrokh Etemad and William C. Pfefferle of PCI and Vivek K. Khanna and Kenneth O. Smith of Solar Turbines, Inc. Precision Combustion, Inc. (www.precision-combustion.com) is a clean energy technology company developing a range of catalytic devices and systems for clean and efficient combustion, pollution control and the chemical process industry. PCI currently focuses on RCL® gas turbine products and Microlith fast response catalytic reactors for fuel processors, IC engine emissions after treatment, chemical reactors, and other applications. Customers of PCI include gas turbine, aerospace system, automotive, fuel cell, and fuel reformer manufacturers as well as the U.S. government.
